5 Reasons to Be a Girl Scout This Year

The Girl Scout New Year is almost here, and those celebrating on October 1 understand how exciting this next year is going to be. Not only do we have our Nation's Best Cookie Seller title to maintain, but this next year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts Gold Award. But if you've never been a Girl Scout and have no idea what we're talking about, well, get excited because here's the top five reasons to join Girl Scouts this year:

 Make new friends
Being a Girl Scout is not just a way to have fun, but a way to have fun together! Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council has over 78,000 girl and adult members, and nationwide Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is 2.8 million members strong. Connect with girls in your community who share your same passions. Serve together, learn together, go to camp together, and as the years pass you can grow and succeed together.

 Get better grades
Most Girl Scouts involved in a 2012 study were shown to be academically successful! We're sure you're a champ in the classroom, but we can help boost you from B's to steady A's, because our stellar community of girls and helpful leaders will inspire you to do better. Destiny, a 12 year old Girl Scout from our state of Texas said, "I have been a Girl Scout since I was 5 (a Daisy), and I would not be where I am today. I think I would do well in school, and I don't think I would get along with others as well as I do."

 Have new experiences
What would you like to check off your bucket list this year? Learn to ride a horse, learn to sail, learn how to camp--how about go to Summer Resident Camp!? We can help you accomplish everything you want to this year. You can create your own Girl Scout experience, too! One that fits around your schedule. Just sign up for a short series and one-time events on all kinds of topics. You might want to make a robot, learn a new fitness routine, attend an engineering expo, join a canoe-racing team, and more!

 Go on trips
Girl Scout Destinations are the ultimate adventure for individual girls ages 11 and older! With different trips every year, there’s something amazing for everyone to experience. Make friends from all over the country as you travel with Girl Scouts from different states, see and learn new things, and pack your bags full of inspiring, life-changing experiences and memories. GSSJC's summer 2016 Destinations applications start coming in late September, early October--don't miss your chance to explore the world!

 Become a stronger leader
In Girl Scouts you'll become a leader--and have fun! Build your leadership skills in the most unexpected ways by serving at your local animal shelter, taking action and giving a city park a makeover, even growing through the ranks of girl scouts and mentoring young girls who were just like you. Girl Scouts have long been recognized for their role in impacting their communities, and the world. Did you know that Girl Scouts have been in space, Congress, and even in the White House!
