Weekly Media Wrap-up: June 2-8

Credit: Houston Chronicle
Each week Girl Scouts all over our Council are recognized by local media for their service projects, awards or even just for doing a good deed. Check out our favorites from the past week below!

The Houston Chronicle included a fantastic photo of Girl Scouts welcoming the space shuttle replica to NASA last Sunday. More than 300 Girl Scouts were in attendance at the event.

YourAtascocitaNews.com shared Troops #9378 and #9495 hosted a Pink Party to celebrate the life of Barb Ellerbrock, a teacher at Oak Forest Elementary who passed away last fall from leukemia. Donations collected will be given to the American Cancer Society in Barb's honor.

The Fort Bend Star recognized Troop #19279 for earning their Bronze Award. The Girl Scouts planted a garden for residents at Hampton at Meadows Place - Brookdale Senior Living in Stafford. Congratulations on earning your Bronze Award girls!

Ultimate WoodlandsYourPearlandNews.com, the Fort Bend Star, Ultimate Pasadena and Ultimate Clear Lake all shared stories on a number of volunteers in each area who were recently recognized for their volunteerism and continuing service to GSSJC at the Adult Recognition event.

Finally, the following Girl Scouts were recognized for earning their Gold Award:

  • Ultimate Memorial reported Stephanie R. earned her Gold Award for creating an after-school center for the Alliance for Multi-Cultural Services.
  • Ultimate Woodlands reported Demme D. earned her Gold Award for planning and hosting the 2011 Human Rights Walk and Festival in The Woodlands.
  • YourRanchNews.com reported Melanie P. earned her Gold Award for planning and teaching a music camp for  young girls.

Congratulations to these Gold Award recipients!

This week on the GSSJC blog, we welcomed GSSJC's new President of the Council and Chair of the Board Stacy Methvin. We also shared the story of three Girl Scouts who taught the Red Cross Basic Sailing course they took themselves as young girls - what an impressive trio!
