Weekly Media Wrap-up: April 27-May 4, 2012

Each week Girl Scouts all over our Council are recognized by local media for their service projects, awards or even just for doing a good deed. Starting this week, we'll be sharing our favorite stories of the week in our Friday "Media Wrap-up" posts.

ABC 13 showcased the Girl Scouts who participated in last Saturday's Nursing Discovery Day through GSSJC's partnership with the Harris County Hospital District. Dozens of girls got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be a nurse.

We were honored and excited ABC 13 morning news anchor Sharron Melton gave GSSJC a shout out one morning last week: reports local Girl Scouts donated food and a bookcase to Wags to Whiskers, an area nonprofit animal rescue, to earn their Bronze Award. Looks like they got to spend some quality time with the Bronze Award beneficiaries as well - check out their cute photo.

We spotlighted the 2012 Success to Significance luncheon, held last Friday, which raised more than $225,000 for the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as well as shared some photos of Chalk in the Park, one of GSSJC's 100th anniversary activities.

Several GSSJC Gold Award recipients were recognized in their neighborhood newspapers for earning the highest honor in Girl Scouting:

  • Ultimate Fort Bend shared sisters Sahar and Sana Noorani earned their Gold Award by hosting girl empowerment workshops at an area women's shelter.
  • Ultimate Bellaire reports Girl Scout Riley McGann earned the Gold Award by cleaning and organizing her church's costume closet.
  • Ultimate Cy-Fair shared Lindsey Hardin earned the Gold Award for her work with Reach Unlimited.
